This weekend's Hometown Hockey event has been designated as a Zero Waste event
City staff and volunteers are working to minimize waste created at the event
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed February 24, 2017 5:30 PM
Summary
This weekend's Hometown Hockey event has been designated as a Zero Waste event. This means that the City is trying to minimize the amount of waste produced by the event as much as possible.
A number of Zero Waste stations will be set up in Maffeo Sutton Park. The aim is to recycle and compost all of the waste produced by the event and to send zero waste to landfill. The City will be measuring the types of waste sorted and collected to calculate how much waste was diverted from landfill during the event.
Between 9,000 and 12,000 people are expected to attend over the weekend and the City expects around six tonnes of waste to be sorted.

Key Points
- Vendors have been contacted and asked to only use compostable and recyclable items at the event. They have been asked not to use Styrofoam or single serve items such as condiments.
- The City will be setting up three Zero Waste stations that will be manned by volunteers who will help event goers to sort their waste. They will sort in to four categories; Organics, Recyclables, Refundable Containers and Waste.
- Litter bins will be out of service during the hours of the event to help encourage event goers to use the Zero Waste stations.
- The Zero Waste stations will also double as info booths for anyone wanting any information on recycling in Nanaimo.
Quotes
"I'm very excited that this event has been designated as a Zero Waste event. We aim to reduce waste to landfill as much as possible and to educate event goers about recycling at home at the same time. We hope that everyone has a great time and I am grateful to the volunteers who are manning our waste stations. "
