Annual maintenance begins at Beban Park pool and weight room
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed July 25, 2017 12:15 PM
Summary
Starting Monday, July 31 through Tuesday, September 5, the Beban Park pool and weight room will be closed for annual maintenance.
During this five-week period a variety of cleaning and maintenance work will be completed including, touch-up painting, re-grouting and cleaning of change room lockers and athletic equipment. Work crews will also:
- replace any missing tiles in the pools, change rooms and on the pool deck;
- drain and clean all tanks (main/leisure/teach/hot tub);
- inspect/repair expansion joints;
- service the pool circulating pumps and heat exchangers.
Link to Strategic Plan: The Beban pool and weight room maintenance shutdown support the Asset Management priority.
Key Points
- During the Beban Park pool maintenance shutdown, the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre remains open. There are public swims at the Kin Pool and Westwood Lake Park also offers swimming with lifeguards on duty from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm daily until September 4.
- The City aims to keep pool shutdowns as short as possible and schedules them during the summer months when outdoor activities are the focus for many residents.
- Just a reminder, all City facilities are closed on BC Day (August 1) and Labour Day (September 4).
Quotes
"Yearly closures are necessary to maintain areas that can only be accessed when empty. Keeping our facilities clean and in good working condition helps to keep them operating efficiently throughout the rest of the year. We encourage you to take advantage of many other swimming options in the City during this time. There are great programs being offered at NAC such as the $3 Happy Hour and Totally Tubular Tuesdays."
Quick Facts
- Maintenance of City facilities happens on a daily basis, but major jobs like painting, fixing equipment and deep cleaning can only be done when the facility is empty for an extended period of time.
- It takes a few days just to empty the pool before work can begin.
- A five week closure at Beban is the normal length of time that occurs annually for maintenance.
