City of Nanaimo accepting proposals from indigenous artists
Art project planned for Colliery Dam spillway
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed July 26, 2017 4:00 PM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo is seeking proposals for artwork that celebrates the rich cultural histories and continuing presence of indigenous peoples in the place now known as Colliery Dam Park.
Artists are asked to submit proposals that demonstrate imaginations, originality, excellence and artist merit considering the site's location, context and audience. There are other factors to consider including resistance to year-round weather conditions and safety in a high traffic public space.
Once a successful proponent has been chosen, a Selection Committee and City staff will work with with the artist(s) to determine the best artwork for the application in keeping with the Coastal Salish design.
Link to Strategic Plan: Cultural Vitality: Promoting Nanaimo’s arts, creativity, heritage, cultural traditions and community wellness.

Quick Facts
- The Colliery Dam Auxiliary Spillway was completed in the Spring of 2016.
- The design consists of a 13.8 meter wide concrete labyrinth weir that leads into a concrete channel and, ultimately, into a natural steam channel. There is a bridge and walkway that cross over the weir and allow for public viewing.
- Since 2010, the City has been involved in a dynamic and evolving public art program that enhances and animates our City's parks.
