Residents reminded to observe Tree Management and Protection Bylaw

Summary

The City of Nanaimo reminds residents a Tree Management and Protection Bylaw is in place. The bylaw, which can be found on City's website, may require residents to obtain a permit for the removal of even one tree on private property.

Residents are also reminded it is illegal to trespass onto public property to prune or remove trees for any reason without consent from the City.

Key Points

Residents undertaking yard work involving the removal of trees are advised to review the Tree Management and Protection Bylaw.
Removing trees from City-owned land is strictly prohibited.
Garry Oaks, Arbutus, Pacific Dogwood and Western Yew are of particular concern. A full list of tree species and critical sizes is listed in the bylaw.
The bylaw was reviewed, revised and passed by Council in December of 2013.
