City of Nanaimo Reviewing Off-Street Parking Bylaw

Summary

The City of Nanaimo is seeking input on new City parking regulations from local residents, business owners and property owners at an upcoming open house to be held on Tuesday, April 3rd from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Beban Social Centre. A bylaw to replace the existing "Development Parking Regulations Bylaw 2005 No. 7013" (Parking Bylaw), is currently being developed. Participants will have the opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed bylaw.

Parking is a significant factor in how a city grows and develops and how citizens experience their City. More information including an online survey, draft bylaw and highlights can be found under Parking Bylaw Review on the Projects page at www.nanaimo.ca

The purpose of the new bylaw is to achieve a more compact and walkable community as envisioned in the City’s Official Community Plan and Transportation Master Plan. The new Parking Bylaw will regulate off-street parking requirements for vehicles and bicycles throughout Nanaimo and includes changes such as:

  1. Change to parking requirement for shopping centres;
  2. New bicycle parking requirements;
  3. Changes to the multiple family parking requirement; and
  4. New policy to evaluate parking variance requests.
