City of Nanaimo Reviewing Off-Street Parking Bylaw
Open House scheduled for April 3
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed March 19, 2018 10:30 AM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo is seeking input on new City parking regulations from local residents, business owners and property owners at an upcoming open house to be held on Tuesday, April 3rd from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Beban Social Centre. A bylaw to replace the existing "Development Parking Regulations Bylaw 2005 No. 7013" (Parking Bylaw), is currently being developed. Participants will have the opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed bylaw.
Parking is a significant factor in how a city grows and develops and how citizens experience their City. More information including an online survey, draft bylaw and highlights can be found under Parking Bylaw Review on the Projects page at www.nanaimo.ca
The purpose of the new bylaw is to achieve a more compact and walkable community as envisioned in the City’s Official Community Plan and Transportation Master Plan. The new Parking Bylaw will regulate off-street parking requirements for vehicles and bicycles throughout Nanaimo and includes changes such as:
- Change to parking requirement for shopping centres;
- New bicycle parking requirements;
- Changes to the multiple family parking requirement; and
- New policy to evaluate parking variance requests.
Link to Strategic Plan: Environmental Responsibility- creating greater efficiencies in how we use transportation. Active Lifestyle- creating a physically and economically accessible city.
Key Points
- A drop-in open house regarding the proposed off-street parking bylaw will be held on April 3 in the Beban Park Social Centre, Rooms 1 and 2, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
- The proposed bylaw includes a number of changes regarding the amount of vehicle and bicycle parking a residential or commercial development is required to provide.
Quotes
"Parking requirements play a fundamental role in urban development. Large parking areas impact urban form by creating areas with little activity that are often unwelcoming for pedestrians. The goal of the Parking Bylaw review is to create a more walkable urban form while recognizing actual parking needs."
