Planning in the Works for Upcoming Public Engagement Pilot Program Session
Task Force makes call for topic submissions
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed June 12, 2018 10:45 AM
Summary
To help finish planning the third session of the Public Engagement Pilot Program, the Community Engagement Task Force is seeking topic suggestions from residents. The session takes place on Saturday, July 28 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Oliver Woods Community Centre and will focus on solution-based discussions with a panel of experts speaking to a topic for the first part and residents and members of Council further discussing and finding solutions after.
Topic submissions should be framed around a question seeking a solution, for example, "Community Engagement - How can Nanaimo become more engaged?" or "Economic Development: How can we create a more economically viable Nanaimo?". Residents wishing to provide a topic can do so by filling out an online survey which will be available on the Pilot Program's page on the City website from June 18-25, emailing PublicEngagement@nanaimo.ca or calling 250-755-4460, ext 4265 by June 25 at 4:00 pm. There will also be a form in the June 14 edition of the Nanaimo News Bulletin which can be mailed to or dropped off at City Hall by June 22.

Key Points
- Topic submissions should be framed around a question seeking a solution, such as, "Community Engagement - How can Nanaimo become more engaged?" or "Economic Development: How can we create a more economically viable Nanaimo?".
- The goal of this session is to connect citizens with council in a collaborative way and work together towards an issue of importance to Nanaimo.
- Those wishing to attend the third session are encouraged to RSVP by July 20 via email PublicEngagement@nanaimo.ca or phone 250-755-4460, ext 4265.
- One table will be livecast so residents can participate online. More information will be available closer to the date on the City website, facebook.com/CityofNanaimo and twitter.com/CityofNanaimo
Quotes
"We encourage everyone to submit a topic to ensure that the session is relevant and join us in testing an innovative approach to having residents and Council work side by side to help shape the future of our city."
"The pilot program will test a new format at this next session that will see Council and residents collaborating towards finding solutions. To really get the most out of this format we hope to see an increase in participation from the community on July 28."
Quick Facts
- The Community Engagement Task Force is a result of a Council motion made to set up an "ad-hoc committee" to develop a pilot program consisting of open-topic engagement sessions held in an informal setting. Their next meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 26 at 4:30 pm in the Service and Resource Centre boardroom (411 Dunsmuir Street) and is open to the public.
