Upsize or downsize! Cart exchanges are underway

Summary

For north and south Nanaimo residents, phase two of the Sort Toss Roll automated curbside pickup program is now through its trial period, and the City is offering free upsizing or downsizing of recycling and garbage carts until Friday, November 30, 2018. After November, a cart exchange will come with a $25 administration fee.

While there are no additional fees for residents that choose an up or downsized blue recycling cart, residents choosing to upsize their black garbage cart will see a $100 increase to user rates to cover the extra tipping fees at the Regional Landfill. This cost is similar to using the $3 garbage tags for extra bags in the past.

The City is expecting a large number of requests to fill and thanks residents in advance for their patience as the cart exchanges take place.

Key Points

  • There is currently no option to increase the size of the organics (green) carts.
  • Increasing the size of the garbage (black) cart will increase annual user rates by $100.
  • Multi-family residences can also choose to split their larger sets into smaller sets for each unit.
  • The cart exchange period runs from Monday, October 29 through Friday, November 30, 2018.

Quotes

"Waiving the $25 admin fee for cart exchanges is our way of saying thanks to residents for trying the initial 120L garbage cart and 240L recycling carts during our trial period, and for following the automated collection guidelines that are outlined in our online Sort Toss Roll brochure."
