Status update on water treatment plant

Summary

As of 3:00 p.m. on December 22, 2018, water treatment plant troubleshooting continues with external support staff being brought in to assist. Water filtration is ongoing in manual mode and the plant is keeping up with demand. Residents and businesses are asked to continue their efforts to conserve water.

  • Power was restored to the water treatment plant on Friday night thanks to BC Hydro's efforts.
  • At 4:00 a.m. on December 21, 2018, generators in the City of Nanaimo's water treatment plant suffered a breakdown. Plant operators were able to restore generator power however, a number of critical faults within the plant have been interrupting production.
  • Staff are working on two fronts: first, to treat water manually and second, to troubleshoot the root cause of malfunction.
