Road network improvements will bring traffic relief to Bowen and Northfield
First Phase of the Boxwood Connector Project to be completed in 2019
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed February 28, 2019 2:15 PM
Summary
The Boxwood Connector is a road network project that will ease traffic congestion at the intersection of Bowen Road and Northfield Road by diverting traffic and improving vehicle circulation. Guided by Complete Street principles, the proposed new roadways and intersections will also support walking, cycling and transit.
Phase 1 construction will be completed in 2019 and includes site clearing, soil and environmental improvements, a new storm water pond and plantings, and placement of preload material that will help compact the soil over the next two years to prepare it for roadway construction.
Site clearing work will start this week in advance of the upcoming bird nesting window. A Tree Removal Permit has been obtained and all trees to be removed are located on City-owned property. Tree replacement and restoration work will be completed as part of the construction project in accordance with the City of Nanaimo’s Tree Protection Bylaw. Completing tree removal now will allow construction of Phase 1 later this year.
