Swimming lessons rescheduled to Nanaimo Aquatic Centre during Beban Pool Repair
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed November 3, 2021 5:00 PM
Summary
While Beban Park Pool's main tank is under repair, upcoming swimming lessons originally scheduled for Beban Park Pool in the afternoons Monday to Friday are now cancelled. To address the loss of swimming lessons and water safety, additional classes were added to Nanaimo Aquatic Centre on Saturdays and Sundays. This change impacts the Everyone Welcome sessions at the Aquatic Centre, eliminating some morning sessions.
There are still many opportunities for public swimming at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre even with increased swimming lessons taking place.
Everyone Welcome Sessions are as follows:
- Saturday: 1:45-10 pm
- Sunday: 6-9 am & 1:45-10 pm
- Monday to Friday, 6 am-2 pm & 7-10 pm
The Leisure Pool at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and Beban Park Pool is also open as follows:
- Monday to Friday, 3-7 pm
The aquatic schedule also includes aquatic fitness classes, hot tubs, saunas, waves, slides and water features. For more information about the temporary aquatic schedule and for any updates, please visit recreation.nanaimo.ca and follow the City of Nanaimo on social media (@cityofnanaimo).
The City of Nanaimo is committed to offering swimming lessons to our community. This is especially important, as Nanaimo is surrounded by water with vast oceanfront, lakes and rivers and an abundance of aquatic activities available. According to the Lifesaving Society of Canada, tragically 400 people drown in Canada each year, and the vast majority of them are preventable. Children between the ages of 0 and 9 years represent the largest proportion of drowning-related cases at 79%.
Link to Strategic Plan: Swimming lessons and access to recreational activity are a part of the City of Nanaimo's commitment to Livability.
Key Points
- Beban Park Pool's main 25-metre tank is undergoing repairs, but the facility, including the weight room, leisure pool, sauna, hot tub and teaching pool are open.
- The temporary aquatic schedule was put into place in order to accommodate as many users as possible, including the addition of swimming lessons, while Beban Park Pool undergoes repairs.
