Local artist captures hard work of crews at Arrow Road & gifts painting to City

Summary

On March 31, 2022, local artist Karel Doruyter presented Mayor Leonard Krog and City of Nanaimo CAO Jake Rudolph with a new painting that celebrates the watermain and sanitary sewer work which is nearing completion on Arrow Road and Nottingham Drive. The painting, which depicts a scene of heavy machinery and City crew at work on location on Arrow Road, was presented in appreciation of the crew and project.

With any construction or upgrade project that disrupts a neighbourhood, City crews and contractors hired by the City try to be as accommodating to residents as possible, and allow residents to leave and return without much wait at any given time. It's a balancing act between speed and efficiency and respecting residents, their properties, and their daily come and go needs.

Work on the Nottingham Drive and Arrow Way Utility Upgrade project is being handled by City staff and is expected to be complete in early May, 2022.

Quotes

"If a picture is worth a thousand words, this inspirational painting is worth a gazillion. We'll be displaying it prominently at Public Works as a reminder to our staff that they are appreciated, they do amazing work and they serve the community extremely well. Thank you, Karel Doruyter, for this beautiful artwork and your positive feedback."

City of Nanaimo

"I can’t express the appreciation I have for the workers associated with this project. In the beginning, I thought it would be near to impossible to get out for shopping and medical appointments. I found the opposite. Everyone bent over backwards to move the machinery, etc. to allow us to come and go with a minimum of waiting. In appreciation of the whole project I would like to give this completed work to the Public Works Department. I feel that much too often they bare the brunt of negative comments."
