City offers variety of free activities and events this summer

Summary

The City of Nanaimo's Parks, Recreation and Culture department is pleased to offer a number of free activities and events this season.

Concerts in the Park are now underway and will continue throughout the summer at various park locations and featuring a variety of local talent. Here are the upcoming dates:

  • Tuesday, July 4, 6-7 p.m. at Pipers Lagoon Park: Island Time Saxophone Quartet (Wind Instruments)
  • Wednesday, July 12, 6-7 p.m. at Pipers Lagoon Park: From the Earth (Folk Duo)
  • Friday, July 14, 6-7 p.m. at Kin Park at Departure Bay: Velvet Stardust (60s & 70s covers)
  • Wednesday, July 19, 6-7 p.m. at Bowen Amphitheatre: Colliding Canyons (Psychedelic Instrumental Rock)
  • Tuesday, July 25, 6-7 p.m. at Colliery Dam Park: Gab Gosselin (Acoustic Guitar/French Repertoire)
  • Friday, July 28, 6-7 p.m. at Maffeo Sutton Park: Grinning Barretts (Celtic Punk Rock)
  • Tuesday, Aug. 1, 6-7 p.m. at Westwood Lake: Myc Sharratt (Folk)
  • Wednesday, Aug. 16, 6-7 p.m. at Bowen Amphitheatre: Details featuring DJ B. Rizla (Rap)

The Playground Program is back again this summer. It is for children ages 5 to 12 and offers a variety of games, arts, crafts and sports under the guidance of a summer leader. The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Harewood Centennial Park
  • Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Mansfield Park
  • Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Groveland Park
  • Thursday & Friday, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Country Hills Park

There will be three Family Fun Nights with community booths and entertainment. The schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, June 29, 4-7 p.m. at Departure Bay Kiwanis Park
  • Wednesday, July 26, 4-7 p.m. at Mansfield Park
  • Tuesday, Aug. 22, 4-7 p.m. at Harewood Centennial Park

Lifeguards at Westwood Lake Park will start on July 1 and be there on Fridays, Saturday, Sundays and statutory Mondays from 11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. until Monday, Sept. 4. Lifeguards can be found at Westwood Lake's First Beach.

For those looking to keep cool this summer, the City operates four water parks that are open daily from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Locations are as follows:

  • Departure Bay Water Park
  • Deverill Square Park
  • Harewood Centennial Park
  • Mansfield Park

The City of Nanaimo is also offering a variety of registered summer daycamps and programs this summer. Those programs are found in the online Summer Activity Guide at www.nananimo.ca.

The community is invited to come and meet our staff who will be attending the Commercial Street Market each Thursday, 5-9 p.m. from June 22 until Aug. 31.
