Call for applications: Public Safety Committee
The City of Nanaimo seeks engaged volunteers to advise on safety and security in our community
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed November 17, 2023 11:00 AM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo is looking for volunteers to join a new committee to help improve safety and security within our community. The Public Safety Committee will directly advise Nanaimo's City Council on the City's public safety programs, policies and strategic initiatives.
Discussions will lead to recommendations on a wide range of safety topics, including residential and commercial business safety, public nuisance matters, graffiti and vandalism, vehicular crime, traffic safety, public safety and security and fire safety. The committee will also work with Council to increase public awareness and education on safety-related matters. Members will review information provided by safety groups and agencies such as the Nanaimo RCMP, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and City of Nanaimo Bylaw Services and will be advocates for their work as it relates to the community, enforcement and the protection of vulnerable persons.
The Public Safety Committee will consist of nine voting members including two members of Council and seven members-at-large. The committee will meet together every second month, and the volunteer term will run until November 2026, coinciding with the current City Council's term.
Nanaimo residents with a passion for our community's health and a willingness to volunteer are encouraged to apply. The team of successful applicants will reflect a broad cross-section of our community and each member will be appointed on the basis of their individual availability, experience and expertise and not as a formal representative of any particular organization. Applicants must have no conflict of interest with Council or the committee and it's purpose.
Applications for the Public Safety Committee can be submitted to the Legislative Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023. A fillable form and a PDF version are available on the City's website:
