Tree dedication in memory of Lisa Marie Young and all MMIWG2S+

Tree dedication taking place October 18 on Departure Bay waterfront walkway

Summary

On October 18, the City of Nanaimo, alongside family, friends and supporters of Lisa Marie Young, will dedicate a tree in her memory and in honour of all missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people.

Lisa Marie Young disappeared from the City of Nanaimo on June 30, 2002. Lisa’s mother, Marlene Joanne Young, fought to keep her daughter's memory alive until her dying days. The family, friends and supporters of Lisa explain that the “fight for justice” in her name continues today.

The dedication is supported by the City of Nanaimo’s Tree Donation Program which began in the spring of 2024. City staff worked closely with Lisa Marie Young’s family, friends and supporters for the special dedication of a tree as an extension of this program.

The dedication will take place at the north end of the Departure Bay waterfront walkway, starting at 10:30 a.m. RSVP through Facebook here.

Quotes

"Lisa Marie Young has now been missing for more than 22 years. The loss of this talented young person is deeply felt by her family, her friends and her entire community. It is our hope that the dedication of this tree at Departure Bay will provide comfort to everyone that loves and misses Lisa. We hope, too, that this tree will be meaningful for the families, friends and loved ones of all other missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people."
