NEWS RELEASE - Distributed October 25, 2024 3:00 PM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo invites community members to celebrate the grand opening of the Beban Park Pickleball Courts on Thursday, October 31 at 12:30 pm. The courts are located on the Beban Park grounds near the Beban Park Golf Course & Driving Range and were created with input from local pickleball players and the Nanaimo Pickleball Club.
The event will feature a ribbon cutting, a demonstration game with instruction and pickleball clinics for both beginner and advanced players. Open play will be welcomed after the event has concluded.
The new facility features eight courts (two more than at the previous Beaufort site) and adds to the many recreational opportunities available at Beban Park, including swimming, skating, tennis, golf, mountain bike riding and BMX riding (presently under construction).
The courts are fully fenced, feature a specialty anti-slip sport coating and are equipped with event power and a water fountain. The main entrance is located on the west side of the courts. Bleachers, partially funded by the Nanaimo Pickleball Club, will be situated in a central viewing area arranged in a pyramid format so spectators can sit on both sides.
- The total project budget (not including bleachers) is $533,700. Bleachers will be ordered and installed at a future date and will be partially funded by an $8000 contribution from the Nanaimo Pickleball Club. [*corrected October 28, 2024]
In the coming months, the City will convert the former Beaufort pickleball courts into youth courts supporting mixed recreational opportunities including basketball and hockey.
Link to Strategic Plan: The opening on the new Beban Park Pickleball Courts aligns with the goals of the City of Nanaimo’s City Plan by providing recreation facilities and infrastructure to meet the demands of the community as it grows and that support overall recreation and wellness needs.
