2025 Curbside Collection Calendars are ready but delivery is delayed
Residents can use alternatives to keep on schedule with their carts during postal strike
NEWS RELEASE - Distributed December 9, 2024 9:00 AM
Summary
The City of Nanaimo normally delivers the annual Curbside Collection Calendars by post to homes on each of our ten collection routes. However, with postal service temporarily suspended, there are many ways that residents can stay up to date and wheeling their carts to the curb on the correct days. The City's Curbside Collection Calendars will be printed and mailed out once the postal strike is resolved.
The Nanaimo Recycles app is the best option. The app can be set to send reminders leading up to and on collection day, can be used to glance at future collection days, and the City pushes out updates on the app when there are weather delays or other unpredictable collection updates. The app is available on Apple’s App Store and on Google Play.
Another method is to sign up for emails. Residents can access their route's calendar and subscribe to receive email alerts by entering their address into the Calendar Tool on the City's website.
For residents that lean away from technology but would like a printout of their schedule, front desk staff at these City facilities are ready to help:
- Service and Resource Centre (411 Dunsmuir Street)
- Beban Park (2300 Bowen Road)
- Bowen Park (500 Bowen Road)
- Nanaimo Aquatic Centre (741 Third Street)
- Nanaimo Ice Centre (750 Third Street)
- Oliver Woods Community Centre (6000 Oliver Road)
Help can also be found at Nanaimo branches of the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL). VIRL's printout costs are 25 cents per page.
While our curbside collection schedule is predictable (weekly with alternating recycling/garbage pickup) the add-a-day system that accounts for stat holidays can add some confusion, especially at this time of year with Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s day each bumping collection days. The City recommends using the app, but to self-calculate, first look at the 2024 calendar. If the last collection day of 2024 is before Christmas then add three weekdays to find the next collection day, and if the last collection day is after Boxing Day then add one week day.
Link to Strategic Plan: Providing alternative ways to access collection dates helps to maintain current services and contributes to community health.
Key Points
- While the annual curbside collection calendars for 2025 are ready for printing and delivery, the ongoing postal strike means that residents need to use alternative ways to access collection dates. The City has both online and in-person options available.
- Residents are encouraged to download and use the Nanaimo Recycles app on the App Store or Google Play, or to access their collection calendar on the City's website at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/calendar.
- Once the postal strike is over and postal service returns, the 2025 Curbside Collection Calendars will be printed and mailed out.
- Residents can go to the Service and Resource Centre or any of the City's recreation facilities for assistance and a calendar printout of their upcoming collection dates.
