Brickyard Traffic Circle Improvements

Back to map

Project Description

This project will add several traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvements to the Broadway/Brickyard intersection. The existing traffic circle, located within the McGirr Elementary, Frank Ney Elementary, and Dover Secondary school catchment areas, includes four uncontrolled pedestrian crossings surrounding a single-lane configuration. Originally designed and built early in Nanaimo’s adoption of traffic circles, the infrastructure no longer meets modern standards for signage and pavement markings.

Planned Updates:

  • Splitter Islands to delineate traffic lanes entering the circle.
  • Modern LED streetlights
  • New signage to provide clearer guidance to drivers and increase awareness of pedestrian crossings.
  • Revised Pavement Markings and bollards for traffic flow.

These upgrades will bring the circle closer to contemporary design standards.
