Smoke alarms are life-saving devices. By installing the correct number of smoke alarms in the proper locations throughout your home and maintaining them in good working condition, you can significantly lower the risk of fire-related injuries or fatalities for your family. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to: 

  1. Check
  2. Test, and
  3. Clean your smoke alarms. 

Additional key steps to ensure safety: 

  • Place smoke alarms in every bedroom, in the hallway outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home, including the basement, in compliance with Provincial and Federal Fire and Building Codes.
  • Carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions step by step.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly to confirm they are functioning correctly.
  • Clean your smoke alarms according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Replace batteries as frequently as advised by the manufacturer.
  • Upgrade any smoke alarm that is over ten years old.
  • Investigate the cause of any false alarms and ensure you have a well-practiced escape plan in the event of an actual fire.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue will install smoke alarms in most single family residential units within the City of Nanaimo.  If you live in a multi-residential unit please contact your property manager, strata manager, or property owner to address fire protection system deficiencies.
