Climate Reporting

Provincial Reporting

Since 2008, the City of Nanaimo has reported on our climate action work in exchange to the Province.  The City receives provincial funding for climate action through the Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP)

Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP)

In 2022, the Provincial Government replaced the CARIP program. It introduced a new funding and reporting program. The program's funding will help meet community and provincial climate goals. It aligns with the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 and a Climate Adaptation Strategy. The City’s LGCAP reporting submissions can be found here:

Provincial Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP)

Before LGCAP, local governments reported their climate work through CARIP to get funding. The Provincial government disbanded CARIP in 2021, with 2020 being the last reporting year. The City’s previous CARIP reports can be found here:

The Global Covenant of Mayors (GCom)

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) has recognized the City's efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change. Municipalities committing to GCoM agree to advance climate action in three key areas:

  1. reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
  2. identify and adapting to the risks associated with climate change; and
  3. provide access to clean and affordable energy.

GCoM rewards the achievements of reporting municipalities with a variety of globally recognized badges.

In 2022, GCoM awarded the City of Nanaimo all its badges. This includes the Compliance Badge, for completing all steps under the three pillars:

  1. Mitigation,
  2. Adaptation, and
  3. Access to Energy.

The City previously earned the Adaptation Badge for 2021.

The Climate Disclosure Project (CDP)

Nanaimo discloses our emissions and climate actions via the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP). CDP is a global non-profit. It runs an environmental disclosure system for companies, cities, states, and regions. The CDP's Cities A List recognizes local governments for climate action. It is based on environmental data disclosed to the climate reporting platform.

In 2022, Nanaimo was one of 12% of the world's municipalities that submitted to CDP to receive an A score.

In 2023, the City received a B score.
