*New: Animals in Nanaimo, such as dogs and livestock, are now regulated by the Animal Responsibility Bylaw. Learn some quick facts about the bylaw and information on related contacts by downloading the Animal Responsibility Bylaw Brochure.
In addition to the new bylaw, Council approved a Promise to Return Policy where seizure and impound fees will be waived until January 1, 2023 for any cat that is impounded in violation of Section 41 or 47 of the “Animal Responsibility Bylaw 2021 No. 7316” subject to the cat being sterilized and having identification.

Nanaimo Animal Control
Located at 1260 Nanaimo Lakes Road, the Nanaimo Animal Control officers enforce the Animal Control Bylaw as well as operate the Pound & Adoption Centre for the City of Nanaimo.

Frequently Asked Questions
The number of chickens or ducks that can be kept in the City of Nanaimo depends on the size of your property:
- Less than .045 hectares: no more than 4 hens or ducks
- Less than .45 hectares: no more than 6 hens or ducks
- 1 acre or more: 12 hens or ducks maximum
No roosters, cocks, cockerels, or peafowl are kept on the Property may be kept on any property.
A minimum enclosure of .37m2 per hen or duck must be provided
Any Enclosure containing poultry, whether portable or stationary, must comply with requirements of the zone
Enclosures housing poultry must be kept clean, dry, and free from odours
Areas within and surrounding any Enclosure must be kept free from vermin
Any diseased chicken or duck must be euthanized and the carcass destroyed
No butchering or euthanizing of hens or ducks may occur on the property
Hen and duck manure and waste products are composted, in an enclosed bin, or otherwise disposed of to prevent odours
Poultry are not permitted within a dwelling unit or on a balcony or deck; or in a cage, carry-cage, or portable cage other than for the purpose of transport of the Poultry
Poultry may not stray or trespass anywhere other than the property of the owner and may not roam on any un-fenced land, or be released or abandoned anywhere within the City
Failure to comply with these conditions can result in fines of up to $150 per day. The impound fee for any poultry found at large is $10 and the board fee is $10 per day
Yes, the City of Nanaimo does have a feces removal bylaw and persons in violation are liable to a fine of up to $50.00
Yes. There are regulations regarding confinement in vehicles, tethering and transporting animals. Please contact Animal Control for further information

For removal of dead animals on all City streets, please call the Animal Shelter 250-616-0233.
For removal of dead animals on the Parkway or Provincially controlled roadways, please call Mainroad at 1-877-215-6006.
It is recommended that all animals be spayed or neutered for the well-being of the animal and to prevent unwanted pets.
Yes, all dogs must be on a leash and under the control of a competent person when off their owner’s property.
Raccoons getting into garbage and deer destroying plants and trees. Raccoons are attracted to any food source. Keep garbage locked and removing any other food source can help keep raccoons away from your property. Deer can be kept out of your yard if it is fenced.
