Accessory Building Permit

A building permit is required when you are constructing a new accessory building. This can include detached garages, sheds, and other standalone buildings over 10m² (107.64 ft²).

Types of Accessory Buildings

Accessory buildings fall into two main categories: Dwelling and Non-Dwelling.

  • Accessory Dwelling units are designed to provide additional residential living space that is separate from the main home. These structures are fully habitable and typically include kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. These types of units are commonly referred to as carriage hours, garden suites, and laneway houses.
  • Accessory Non-Dwelling buildings are not intended for living accommodations. These buildings are often used for storage, vehicle parking, or personal hobbies. Examples include detached garages, workshops, and storage sheds.
