Special Inspection Permit

A building permit may be issued for a Special Inspection when a property owner requires general information concerning the status of a building for specific uses. The information will not be a building code analysis of the building for proposed uses of the building.

Note: City Building Inspectors are not private home inspectors. We do not inspect your home in preparation for selling your home. Please contact a private house inspector in such cases.

What is required for the permit?

To apply for a Special Permit, apply in person at our office:

  • Service and Resource Centre, 411 Dunsmuir Street

and bring the following, completed forms:

Important!

A property owner needs to consider the repercussions of requesting a Special Inspection from the Building Inspector before initiating the process. Once the Building Inspector has been in a building, any unsafe conditions that are noticed will be required to be corrected within a short timeframe (usually 30 days). In commercial buildings, the unsafe conditions are usually undertaken by the Nanaimo Fire Department through a Fire Upgrade Order.
