Introducing our new Q2 program!
The City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation & Culture is excited to announce and offer the Q2 program starting fall 2024. This program offers selected applicants training in program development, marketing, teamwork, and personal development. It is designed to empower youth leaders to make a positive impact on the community while honing their personal and professional skills.

What is Q2?
Q2 is the final step in our leadership development programs for youth in Nanaimo. The program focuses on personal and professional growth.

What is the goal of the Q2 Program?
The goal of the Q2 program is to empower youth leaders to make a positive impact on their community, while contributing to their own individual success.

What do youth gain from the program?
Each youth will obtain various certification(s) in their area of interest, an up-to-date resume with examples of professional development, an individualized personal learning plan, and a reference letter from the Program Coordinator.

When does the Q2 Program run?
The Q2 program runs from October to June, with training starting in October.

How many participants are accepted in the Q2 program?
For our 2024/2025 pilot year, we average 6-8 participants, with a goal to increase the number of participants each year.

How much does the Q2 Program cost? What do I get with my fee?
The Q2 program costs $170* and is due upon successful admittance into the program. The fee includes the Q2 orientation session, 4 training sessions, meetings throughout the season, the participants chosen certification(s), funds to support their passion project, and a t-shirt. (*Fee is subject to change each season; please see the current Activity Guide for the most up-to-date information.) -
What certifications can be completed?
Each youth admitted into the Q2 program is provided with funds* to help support their professional development by obtaining certifications. Some examples of possible certifications include: Emergency First Aid, FoodSafe, Bronze Medallion, High 5 Principles of Healthy Childhood Development, or NCCP. (*Funds are subject to change each season; please connect with the Program Coordinator for the most up-to-date information.)

What is the passion project?
Each youth has the opportunity to work individually or collectively to design, plan, and lead a passion project that is delivered to the community of Nanaimo. Examples of various passion projects include: creating a community garden, delivering educational programs, starting a youth library, and more!

How can I contact the Program Coordinator?
Please email youthleadership@nanaimo.ca, but note that this is not the most effective way to reach the Program Coordinator once the program is underway.

How do I apply?
Applications for the 2024/2025 program open on September 3rd and close September 30th at 4:30pm.
To apply, submit an online application, a current resume, and a reference letter from someone that can attest to your character and skills.

When will I receive an offer letter?
Offers for the Q2 Program will be sent out via email no more than 9 business days after applications close. -
What if I don’t receive an offer letter?
All applicants will be contacted regarding the status of their application. If you are not a successful applicant for the 2024-2025 pilot season, we invite you to apply for the future season.
