Sign Permit

A permit is required for any sign that is erected or displayed in accordance with the City's Sign Bylaw.

What information is required for the building permit?

Application requirements depend on the type of sign to be installed or erected (freestanding, fascia, canopy, awning, etc.).

All applications must be submitted via the City of Nanaimo's Online Building Permit Application page and include the following:

Are LED/animated signs permitted in the city of Nanaimo?

LED/animated signs are not permitted unless a development variance permit (DVP) is first obtained. The following guidelines are used by City staff and Council when evaluating DVP applications for LED/animated signs and should also be considered by applicants before making their DVP application.
