Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger Rebate
Do you have an electric vehicle (EV) or thinking of getting one? Rebates are available to support the installation of charging equipment for your EV. All rebates are additional to the rebates offered through BC Hydro. While the application process will be similar a separate application must be submitted to the City of Nanaimo and BC Hydro to receive both rebates.
The City of Nanaimo is offering top-up rebates of $150 for single family Homes, duplexes, row houses and townhouses. An additional rebate of up to $1,000 for an EV ready plan and $100 per parking space with access to an EV charger is available for apartments and condo buildings.
The submission criteria for the City of Nanaimo EV Charger rebate will be the same as those required for the BC Hydro rebates.
All rebates are available on a first-come, first served basis until funding runs out. Applicants must live or own property in the City of Nanaimo and the EV charger must be installed within the City of Nanaimo in order to be eligible.
*Applications will be accepted for the rebates listed below but only for EV Chargers, EV Ready Plans, and or EV Ready Charger Infrastructure which were installed or completed after the program start date, May 1, 2023.
Single Family Homes and Duplexes, Row Houses and Townhouses
In addition to BC Hydro rebate offers, single-family homes, row houses, duplexes or townhouses can get a rebate of $150 for the purchase and installation costs of an eligible Level 2 EV charger.
For EV charger rebate applications for all single family homes, duplexes, townhouses and rowhouses, the City will require the following:
If the charger was installed by a licensed electrician, you'll need to provide the following:
- Charger invoice showing proof of payment
- Installation invoice (must show proof of payment and itemized costs broken down by activities performed). See a sample invoice.
- Electrical permit number
- Picture of the installed EV charging station
OR
If the charger was installed by someone who is not a licensed electrician, you’ll need to provide the following:
- Charger invoice showing proof of payment
- Inspection invoice showing proof of payment
- Certificate of successful inspection
*An electrical permit is required under this option. Rather than the licensed electrician, the homeowner is responsible for applying for the permit.
OR
If you already had a 240V outlet to plug your charger into, you’ll need to provide the following:
- Charger invoice showing proof of payment
- Proof of charger internet connectivity- A screenshot of the back-end network operating system that shows that the charging stations are connected to the network
*In this application option, you’ll need to confirm that the outlet is compliant with local electrical code requirements and that a permit was obtained for its installation.
All applications must be submitted within 90 days of the charger installation.
Apply for rebate for Single Family Homes and Duplexes, Row Houses and Townhouses
Apartment and Condo Buildings
The City of Nanaimo will provide top-up rebates for apartment and condo buildings to support the creation and implementation of an EV Ready Plan. Rebates are additional to those provided by BC Hydro.
1) EV Ready Plan
A rebate of up to $1,000 for the creation of an EV Ready plan is available from the City of Nanaimo.
An EV ready plan is a professional strategy for your building prepared by a licensed electrical contractor and/or electrical engineer that includes details about how your building will provide each residential unit with at least one EV ready parking space per residential unit.
To be eligible for the rebate the EV Ready Plan must meet the requirements found on BC Hydro's website.
For an EV Ready Plan rebate, you'll need to provide the following:
- EV Ready Plan - A copy of the EV Ready Plan that was created for you/your property. Make sure it meets the requirements. Please visit BC Hydro's website for detailed program requirements.
- EV Ready Plan Invoice - A copy of the paid invoice from the electrical contractor and/or professional engineer for the costs (broken down by activities performed) to create the EV Ready Plan. If these costs aren't due until the EV Ready infrastructure is installed, upload the quote for the plan instead.
An EV plan is required in order to be eligible for available additional EV Ready infrastructure rebates through the City (see number 2 below) and BC Hydro.
2) EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate
The City will offer a top-up of $100 per parking space to install the electrical infrastructure required to implement the building’s EV ready plan. A property can apply for both the EV Ready Plan and the EV Ready infrastructure rebate together or one at a time. An approved EV Ready Plan is required for this rebate.
For the additional EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate, you'll need to provide the following in addition to the approved EV Ready Plan:
- Infrastructure Installation Quote - A copy of the quote from the electrical contractor for the costs (broken down by activities performed) to install the electrical infrastructure required to implement your EV Ready Plan.
Once the installation is complete, submit the Final Application for EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate
We’ll review your documents and if everything meets the requirements, we’ll process your rebate payment within 90 days.
