Emergency Management

The Emergency Program is a department of Nanaimo Fire Rescue services dedicated to planning for, responding to, recovering from and mitigating major emergencies and disasters that could impact the City of Nanaimo.

The Mission of the Emergency Program is to manage risks from major emergencies and disasters by maintaining the ability to effectively respond and reducing the risk of hazards where possible.

To accomplish this Mission the Emergency Program leads the identification of local hazards, the planning for emergencies and the preparation for response and recovery efforts in the post-incident period. We strengthen the city’s resilience by learning lessons from past incidents and coordinating with private, local, regional and provincial partners wherever possible.

Our mandated actions include:

  • Understanding the local hazard landscape
  • Taking all reasonable steps to reduce the risk
  • Maintaining both response and recovery capability
  • Ensuring city staff are prepared to act when called upon
  • Enhancing community resilience and adaptation by providing accurate and practical information
