City Energy Efficiency Projects

In 2019, Nanaimo City Council declared a climate emergency and made environmental responsibility a cornerstone of their strategic planning. Choosing more efficient options when implementing life-cycle renewals is important to reducing our energy consumption.  In addition, replacing fossil-fuel burning equipment with cleaner, renewable energy is vital to meeting environmental goals.

Since 2008, the City has been strategically implementing projects to improve the efficiency of assets.  For example, today many facilities and street lights use LED technology, consuming considerably less energy, requiring less maintenance, and reducing operating costs.  Additionally, when renewing building HVAC systems, higher-efficiency, clean renewable electric energy options are being implemented where feasible to reduce corporate emissions.
