This week try out the new NanaimoMap, get ready for winter and learn about the City's Affordable Housing Strategy. Read on!
Mapping out Nanaimo
The City of Nanaimo is excited to announce the preview release of the new NanaimoMap. This new map will replace the legacy version of NanaimoMap, which is scheduled to be retired in early 2020.
NanaimoMap is the portal to detailed information on areas such as addressing, property information, active permits, current zoning, utilities and new features like bike lanes, parks trails, and historical aerial imagery. The new version is designed to work intuitively on all screen sizes from smart phones and tablets to large monitors and TVs.
We are welcoming feedback on your experience with the new version of NanaimoMap. Please email your feedback to mapfeedback@nanaimo.ca.
Brrr! Get ready for winter!
With recent temperatures, winter is officially on its way. Are you ready for winter storms?
Have a storm readiness plan and an emergency kit. In the event of a power outage or severe weather, make sure your home is stocked with necessary supplies such as:
- battery-powered flashlight
- radio
- ready-to-eat food
- water
- first-aid kit
- blankets
- candles
- extra clothing

Prevent flooding by ensuring storm drains and catch basins are clear of leaves and debris. If we do get snow this year, remove the snow and ice from the catch basin as long as it is safe to do so. Watch the videos below for tips on how you can safely keep the catch basins clear in front of your home.

Nanaimo's Affordable Housing Strategy
Did you know the City has a strategy in place to promote affordable and accessible housing in Nanaimo? The Affordable Housing Strategy was approved by Council in September 2018 and this week staff are providing an update on progress so far. The good news is, things are looking up! Last year, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported a record number of rental units completed with 536 new units built (more than double that of the year before!). Overall, purpose-built rentals comprised about 56% of the total units completed in 2018. Read the full report.
Take our Short Term Rental Survey! As part of the Affordable Housing Strategy, we are reviewing our Zoning and Business License regulations for short term rentals and B&B's and want to hear from you. The survey is open until December 9.
