Parks, Recreation & Culture

Playgrounds, parks, trails, skateboard parks, bike park, pickle ball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, lacrosse boxes, sports fields and dog parks are open with a number of guidelines to follow.
There are several fitness classes and summer camps being offered outdoors. Visit recreation.nanaimo.ca to register.

Indoor recreation facilities, such as recreation centres, arenas and pools, as well as City-owned cultural venues remain closed. A planning process is underway to reopen City of Nanaimo recreation facilities.

Water Safety Education Team
The City of Nanaimo's Water Safety Education Team will be out this summer visiting local parks and beaches to share their messages on water safety through demonstrations and creative activities. For more activities with Parks, Recreation and

Story Walk #3
Drop in to Richard's Marsh Park (9 Ranchview Dr) anytime from July 24 to August 5 for a StoryWalk® where you can read "Giraffes Can't Dance" by authors Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees. The StoryWalk® concept was created by Anne Ferguson
of Montpelier, Vermont and was developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
If you have a preschool aged child, Parks, Recreation & Culture would like your feedback. They have a short survey in place to help plan for Fall/Winter programming.
Harewood Skateboard Park Officially Open
The Harewood Youth Park officially opened July 6, 2020 with strong support from community partners.
The design was completed with input from community skaters and youth representatives from the Harewood area, including the Harewood Neighbourhood Association.
New Artwork "One Song Staircase" Completed
Commissioned by the City of Nanaimo, artist team Lys Glassford and Lauren Semple of Humanity in Art have collaborated with poet Tina Biello to create a new artwork for downtown Nanaimo, called ‘One Song Staircase.’ The staircase between Wharf Street and Diana Krall Plaza was identified as an ideal location for this small-scale artistic intervention.
