Albert / Fourth Complete Street Phase 1
The Albert / Fourth Complete Street project aims to increase the safety and comfort for people who walk, bike, take transit, and drive along this corridor. This project will see the continuation of on-street cycling facilities between the Downtown Mobility Hub and Vancouver Island University Mobility Hub, which is the City's largest cycling destination. This cycling route is also referred to as the VIU Bikeway.
The project is being completed in phases. Phase 1 will start at the intersection of Fourth Street and Harewood Road, and will continue east to Pine Street.
PHASE 1 UPDATE - Take notice that on September 13, 2022, a certificate of completion, or court order to that effect, was issued with respect to a contract (or subcontract) between The City of Nanaimo and Locar Industries Ltd. Lien Period 45 days: October 28, 2022 Holdback Period 55 days: November 7, 2022. See Notice under the documents tab below.
Phase 2 will pickup where Phase 1 leaves off and continue along Albert Street to Milton Street. Phase 2 construction is scheduled to start in 2022. For more information about Phase 2, click here.

Phase 1 (Fourth Street: Harewood to Pine)
Phase 1 construction is now substantially complete. Some minor deficiencies and restoration works should be completed in Fall of 2022, including the planting of new street trees. Thank you everyone for your patience during construction.
Phase 2 (Albert Street: Pine to Milton)
Construction of Phase 2 is currently scheduled for late 2022.

Phase 1 (Fourth Street: Harewood to Pine)
Phase 1 will start at the intersection of Fourth Street and Harewood Road, and will continue east to Pine Street. Phase 1 includes:
- New buffered cycling lane, concrete curb, grassed boulevard and concrete sidewalk on the south side,
- New buffered shared use path on the north side,
- Crosswalk safety improvements,
- Transit stop improvements,
- Utility Upgrades.
Phase 1 construction is currently scheduled to start in late 2021.
