My Nanaimo This Week for January 27 to February 2, 2020

This week we get prepared, break ground and have a sneak peek of this year's temporary public art selection. Read on!

Around the City

Moving and Shaking
Did you feel the earthquake Friday afternoon? At around 1:30 p.m., a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the south west coast of the island and could be felt here in Nanaimo. While this was a relatively small earthquake, it is a good reminder to be prepared for when a big one strikes.

Being prepared starts with getting an emergency kit together. It's recommended that you have at least seven days worth of supplies if you live on an island. Watch the video below to see how to prepare a kit and visit the Personal Preparedness page on the City website for more information.

If you haven't already, sign up for emergency alerts from the City of Nanaimo with the Voyent Alert! app. Watch the video below to see how simple it is to register and visit the Emergency Call Alert System page on the City website for more information.

Breaking Ground
Things are looking up for 100 Gordon Street - nine storeys up! This past December, PEG Development began site work for the new hotel at 100 Gordon Street and will host a ceremonial ground-breaking this week! The City is excited to see the project move forward. Stay tuned as more construction updates will take place as the project commences.
