Serauxmen Stadium Lighting

The City of Nanaimo is adding new LED stadium lights and a new Scoreboard to Nanaimo’s oldest baseball field, Serauxmen Stadium, located at 745 Third Street.

Construction beginning in March 2020 and completion is anticipated by July 2020.

  • Progress

    Construction is planned to begin in March of 2020 and be complete by July 2020. Additional progress updates will be made available below as the project progresses.

  • Details

    A field lighting project was identified in 2015. At this time, the site was selected as Mariner Field at the Serauxmen Sports Fields (850 Third St) as the best option. The original lighting project was approved in the 2018-2022 Financial Plan.

    As the project moved through the planning stages in 2017, negotiations were active with the School District #68 to secure the purchase of the Serauxmen Stadium (The Stadium) and Rotary Bowl and the jointly funded project for the construction of the Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS) Community Field. As this land exchange deal progressed, and final details were secured for the site, it was determined that the Stadium would be better suited for a field lighting system as this originally was the preferred site. The project at 850 Third Street was cancelled.

    In 2018 an overall concept for the Stadium was developed including a field lighting system. Detailed planning and design began in late 2018. 
  • Background

    Serauxmen Stadium History Tab

    In 1972, Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association (NMBA) signed an agreement with the school district to build a baseball field on an old mine site behind Nanaimo District Secondary School. The mine, which operated between 1919 and 1930, employed up to 300 miners at its peak.

    Bert Lansdell, who held various positions with NMBA was instrumental in both the agreement with the school district and fundraising for the ball field.

    The Serauxmen Service Club of Nanaimo came forward as a major fundraiser for the stadium and field.

    In 1974, the grass and fencing was finished and in 1975, the stadium building was built – more than $300,000 worth of concrete was required to pour the stadium. 

    Serauxmen Stadium officially opened July 31, 1976 in a ceremony that included retired New York Yankees player Mickey Mantle and retired Boston Red Sox player Jim Piersall. Hockey players Johnny Bucyk (Boston Bruins) and Chris Oddleifson (Vancouver Canucks), football players George Reed (Saskatchewan Roughriders) and NHL referee Llyod Gilmour also attended. 

    In 1980, the south bleacher addition was built.
