Heritage Conservation

Nanaimo has a unique and diverse heritage whose story can be told through its historical buildings, structures and sites. In an effort to conserve them, and celebrate Nanaimo’s history overall, a Heritage Conservation Program (2002) was created.  It includes a number of initiatives that have since taken place, including:

  • adoption of a Community Heritage Register;
  • creation of a Downtown Heritage Conservation Area (HCA);
  • creation of incentive programs to encourage conservation of recognized heritage buildings (for details, see Grants); and
  • production of numerous promotional materials designed to raise heritage awareness in the community.
