The Ministry of Housing has identified the City of Nanaimo as a priority community to participate in the Provincial programs Homeless Encampment Action Response Team (HEART) and Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH).more -
Housing
For Nanaimo to remain a great home to people of all income levels, it is critical to maintain a stock of affordable housing and create opportunities for new affordable homes. Housing includes a range of housing types across the entire housing continuum from temporary shelter, to social or supportive housing, non-market housing, market rental, and homeownership.more -
Nanaimo's Health and Housing Action Plan
We are committed to addressing the key social issues facing our community, including homelessness. Our response to homelessness is spelled out in Nanaimo's Health and Housing Action Plan (2021). Nanaimo's System Planning Organization is responsible for implementing key areas of this plan.more -
Nanaimo Youth Resilience Strategy
The City of Nanaimo has been allocated $1.8 million from Public Safety Canada (PSC) through the Building Safer Communities (BSC) Fund to develop and implement a strategic plan to address gun and gang violence and promote youth resiliency.more -
Neighbourhood Associations
Neighbourhood associations are independent voluntary organizations in the City that advocate for the shared interests and goals of residents and may run programs or special events.more -
Social Planning Grants
The purpose of the Social Planning Grant program is to assist organizations in responding to issues of a social nature with initiatives that enhance social cohesion, address the root causes and effects of poverty, contribute to the vitality of our community, and foster social inclusion and social equity.more
Through partnerships with Nanaimo non-profit agencies the City supports the following programs:
