Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Nanaimo area for Friday, Nov. 22, 2024. While this storm isn't expected to be as bad as the one we had earlier this week, be prepared for power outages and downed trees and power lines.

Around Home

Make sure to have a storm readiness plan, an emergency kit and sign up for Voyent Alert!, the City's emergency alert system

In the event of a power outage or severe weather, make sure your home is stocked with necessary supplies such as:

  • battery-powered flashlight
  • radio
  • ready-to-eat food
  • water
  • first-aid kit
  • blankets
  • candles
  • extra clothing

Stay updated with power outages on BC Hydro’s website BC Hydro also has a list of supplies and things you can do to be prepared during an outage.

Out and About

Watch for falling debris and if you spot a downed power line, call 9-1-1. Please use caution in Nanaimo's parks during stormy weather. Avoid venturing into wooded areas including in Nanaimo's parks and trails during times of high winds. City crews are still cleaning up Nanaimo's parks from the windstorm earlier this week. Crews are inspecting and opening parks as quickly as possible, however not all parks have been inspected. Please use caution in treed areas and respect closed gates, closure signage and areas marked with caution tape. Please report downed trees and areas of concern in Nanaimo's parks to 250-756-5200 or parkopsdispatch@nanaimo.ca.
